Looking after your dog’s teeth

9 out of 10 dogs have gum disease by the age of 3 years old. This is not a good statistic for your dog or your wallet! That’s why we stock a range of different products to help keep your dog’s teeth happy and healthy. From toothpaste, sprays and powders to put in their food. We’ve got you covered.

When it comes to dental health, there are a few different issues dogs can face. The most common we get is “why does my dogs breath stink?!”. Bad breath in dogs is usually linked to two things; poor dental hygiene and diet. Very rarely bad breath can be linked to liver or kidney issues, if you suspect this then please speak to your vet.

The best place to start is to check your dogs’ teeth (if they will let you look!). The build up of brown/yellow staining on the teeth is called tartar. Under that hard layer you see on the teeth lives millions of bacteria that live and feed off your dogs’ gums and teeth. This is where the bad breath smell comes from! So now we understand what is causing the bath breath and build up, what can we do about it?

Prevention is better than cure with gum disease. Feeding a healthy diet and giving your dog chews to clean their teeth is a great starting point. There are some supplements that can help too:

Dog toothpaste:

Enzymatic toothpaste contains a range of ingredients to help boost oral health. Helping to reduce tartar, clean teeth and freshen breath. This toothpaste is antibacterial which help to fight the bacteria that cause the build up of tartar.

Pearly Whites Powder:

This natural blend helps to reduce the build-up of plaque whilst also freshening breath. Pearly whites powder contains a blend of Fucus Seaweed, Alfalfa and marjoram. Working to reduce the acid in your dogs saliva, which then lead to plaque build-up. Simply add 1/5 tsp daily to your dogs food This supplement is also available in liquid form, for the fussy pets!

Aviform Daily Dog Dental Powder:

This blend contains Seaweed, Brewers yeast, Postbiotics, Turmeric Parsley, Activated Charcoal and Peppermint. This formula targets bad breath, plaque and tartar build up. Parsley, Peppermint and charcoal help to neutralise oral odours. Whilst seaweed helps fight plaque build-up. With added postbiotics to help support digestion and the gut microbiome. This powder is an easy daily feed, just add to your dogs daily food.

Granulated charcoal:

Charcoal fights bad breath, reduces flatulence and aids digestion. This is a great powder to add to your dogs food to help combat bad breath. Charcoal is a natural and safe for dogs, it works by absorbing gases and toxins.

Meaty bones and chunks!

Dogs need abrasion in their diet, raw meaty bones are perfect for this! Crunching and chewing on cartilage and bones will help clean your dogs teeth and remove any food that will later feed the development of tartar build up. We stock a full freezer for chunks and bones. Its important to chose according to the size of your dog. For example, chicken feet and necks are a brilliant chew for smaller dogs. Whilst a medium size dogs could enjoy duck necks, chicken wings, duck wings and turkey necks. For larger dogs we have beef ribs, venison necks and lamb ribs.

If raw chews are suited for you, don’t worry we have lots of dried options that are a good option too! Ostrich bones and lamb/cow horn have a honeycomb texture which work brilliantly for cleaning your dogs teeth.

Pop into store and we can talk you through all the different options to get your dog’s oral health on track.
